Today In Music History

1963 Stevie Wonder became the first artist to score a US #1 album and #1 single in the same week. Wonder was at the top of the album chart with "Little Stevie Wonder / The 12 Year Old Genius" and had the #1 single with "Fingertips part 2", which was also the first ever live recording hit #1.

1965 The Rolling Stones album, "Out of Our Heads," is number one on the US album chart on the strength of "Satisfaction", "Play With Fire" and "The Last Time".

1968 The director of the University of Tennessee's audio lab, Dr. David M. Lipscomb, reported that a guinea pig subjected over a three month period to 88 hours of rock music recorded at a Knoxville disco at 120 decibels suffered acute damage to the inner ears. Steve Paul, the owner of a New York disco replied, "Should a major increase in guinea pig attendance occur at the Scene, we'll certainly bear their comfort in mind."

1968 Ringo Starr quits The Beatles during the recording sessions for "The White Album" after finding that Paul had been erasing his drum tracks and replacing them with his own. During his absence, Paul fills in on drums for the taping of "Back In The USSR".

2004 81-year-old Al Dvorin, the announcer who uttered the phrase "Elvis has left the building" was killed in a car crash on the way home from an Elvis convention in California
