2003 - Robert Palmer, who reached number 14 in the US in 1979 with "Bad Case Of Loving You", died of a heart attack at the age of 54 on September 26th.

1975 - On September 25th, 41 year old Jackie Wilson suffers a heart attack while performing at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Ironically, he was in the middle of singing one of his biggest hits, "Lonely Teardrops" and was two words into the line, "....my heart is crying" when he collapsed to the stage, striking his head heavily. He suffers brain damage and lapses into a coma. Although he never uttered another word, he remained clinging to life for over eight years and died January 21st, 1984.

1963 - New York disc jockey Murray The K receives a copy of The Beatles' "She Loves You" and plays it on radio station WINS-AM. It is believed to be the first Beatles' song ever played in the US.

1887 - Emile Berliner, a 36 year old German immigrant living in Washington DC, applies for a patent on his invention, the gramophone. The machine was the first to play flat discs as opposed to Thomas Edison's wax cylinder apparatus. The patent would be granted in November.

1963 Stevie Wonder became the first artist to score a US #1 album and #1 single in the same week. Wonder was at the top of the album chart with "Little Stevie Wonder / The 12 Year Old Genius" and had the #1 single with "Fingertips part 2", which was also the first ever live recording hit #1.

1965 The Rolling Stones album, "Out of Our Heads," is number one on the US album chart on the strength of "Satisfaction", "Play With Fire" and "The Last Time".

1968 The director of the University of Tennessee's audio lab, Dr. David M. Lipscomb, reported that a guinea pig subjected over a three month period to 88 hours of rock music recorded at a Knoxville disco at 120 decibels suffered acute damage to the inner ears. Steve Paul, the owner of a New York disco replied, "Should a major increase in guinea pig attendance occur at the Scene, we'll certainly bear their comfort in mind."

1968 Ringo Starr quits The Beatles during the recording sessions for "The White Album" after finding that Paul had been erasing his drum tracks and replacing them with his own. During his absence, Paul fills in on drums for the taping of "Back In The USSR".

2004 81-year-old Al Dvorin, the announcer who uttered the phrase "Elvis has left the building" was killed in a car crash on the way home from an Elvis convention in California.

Arif Mardin, the Turkish-American record producer who was one of the most successful and artistically significant behind-the-scenes figures in popular music in the past half- century, died Sunday at his home in New York City. He was 74.

An arranger and composer as well as a producer, Mardin was a guiding force behind hit records by many pop luminaries, most notably Aretha Franklin, the Bee Gees, Bette Midler, Chaka Khan and Norah Jones, whose careers he was instrumental in shaping. Winner of 12 Grammys, including two for best producer, nonclassical (in 1976 and 2003), he was a major architect of the pop-soul style nicknamed the Atlantic Sound in the late 1960s.

That influential style was a three-way collaboration with his fellow Atlantic Records producers Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd; Mardin was the arranger of the three. It resulted in a series of stirring groundbreaking pop-gospel albums that catapulted the career of the young Aretha Franklin out of the doldrums and earned her the nickname Queen of Soul. The same basic formula of recording with Southern musicians was successfully applied to a number of other artists, most notably Dusty Springfield in her classic "Dusty in Memphis" album.

Out of the Atlantic Sound grew the sophisticated mainstream style of rhythm and blues made by white musicians that he developed working with artists like Daryl Hall and John Oates, Average White Band and the Bee Gees that was labeled "blue-eyed soul." His work with the Bee Gees reignited their stalled career and directly influenced their score for "Saturday Night Fever."

His association with Atlantic, which was founded by his fellow Turks Ahmet Ertegun and his brother Nesuhi, began in 1963 and lasted for nearly four decades until he retired in 2001. He then began a new corporate relationship as senior vice president and co-general manager of the EMI label Manhattan Records. His first project there was producing Jones's debut album, "Come Away With Me." He was also co-producer of its hit follow-up, "Feels Like Home."

Some of his hits as a producer include "Jive Talkin'" (the Bee Gees), "Send in the Clowns" (Judy Collins) and "Against All Odds" (Phil Collins).

The Catherine Russell CD "CAT" is currently one of my absolute favorites. Russell is economical, precise and can flat out sing. She is comfortable in a range of styles that covers the blues, swing jazz, standards, soul/R&B and a touch of country. Now, covering a wide range of genres is nothing new these days. Many artists have made bloated attempts in an effort to prove their eclectic tastes but Catherine Russell actually pulls it off seemingly without effort but with class and substance. She's a real find. One of those artists whose album you can turn people on to and see there eyes widen with appreciation. She even covers the Grateful Dead's "New Speedway Boogie." On many a night, especially in the 1970's, Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band were among the most electrifying, exciting and tightest of any of the truly legendary rock and roll bands. Now comes a living testament to that greatness in the form of a two CD set of a London concert. Live at the Hammersmith Odeon-1975 is a complete Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band performance that captures all the nuances of a band in their prime and, on this night, at their absolute peak. Listen to this loud. From the subtle, understated, tender moments to the exquisitely passion-filled rockers that build powerfully to an exploding crescendo, this is rock and roll as it should be heard. Those who witnessed concerts by the band from this era will know of what I speak. For those who didn't, there's a video testament to this concert (or at least part of it) contained on a DVD with the remastered 30th anniversary "Born To Run" package. I haven't seen it, partly because I want to preserve my personal memories of some of the great Springsteen concert moments that I witnessed. After hearing these CD's however, I now have a sneaky feeling that I'll break down and get the video footage as well. This is one purchase you won't have buyers remorse over. It's filled with great music, great performances and just explodes out of the speakers. It doesn't get any better than this. Do yourself a favor and get this one in your player as soon as possible.

Obituary: Gene Pitney

Pitney's career spanned five decades

Gene Pitney went from being a successful songwriter for other acts to become a major international pop star in his own right. He enjoyed more than 20 hits, including songs like Twenty Four Hours from Tulsa and Something's Gotten Hold of my Heart.

With an unmistakeable singing voice, at once plaintive and melodramatic, Gene Pitney had hits on both sides of the Atlantic.

A friend of The Rolling Stones, Phil Spector and Burt Bacharach, Pitney was also a noted songwriter.

He was born on 17 February 1941 in Hartford Connecticut and soon gained a reputation as a musician while studying at the nearby Rockville High School, where he earned the nickname the Rockville Rocket.

But his early flirtation as a performer initially failed to lead to anything bigger. Undaunted, Pitney moved to New York, where he worked as a songwriter at the fabled Brill Building alongside titans like Carole King, Gerry Goffin and Doc Pomus.

Success

Success was not slow to come, and he was soon penning hits like Rubber Ball for Bobby Vee and Ricky Nelson's Hello Mary Lou.

By 1961, when The Crystals' He's a Rebel gave Pitney his first US No 1 hit as a writer, he was a star in his own right.

But Pitney's career was anything if predictable. After his own successful 1961 single, (I Wanna) Love My Life Away, he was approached by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

They co-wrote three of his best known hits, Only Love Can Break a Heart, (The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance and the classic 24 Hours from Tulsa.

Together with songs like Town Without Pity and Half Heaven-Half Heartache, they constituted a formidable range of work.

Pitney also enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with country music legend George Jones, with whom he recorded an album of duets.

And, in 1964, he met The Rolling Stones, whose then manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, was his publicist - and recorded the Jagger-Richards composition That Girl Belongs to Yesterday
Always more popular in the UK than America, Pitney also made his mark in Italy, Spain and Germany.

More recently, he could be found duetting with Marc Almond on an 1989 version of Something's Gotten Hold of my Heart which gave him his only UK No 1 hit.

Pitney later reflected: "Musically I got along perfect with Marc. The video in the middle of the desert, with me in the white tux and him in the leather, that was great."

1956 - Police in Cleveland, Ohio enforce a 1931 ordinance that barred people under the age of 18 from dancing in public unless accompanied by an adult.

1963 - The first Beatles' single is released in America by Chicago's Vee Jay Records. The 45 featured "Please Please Me" as the "A" side.

1965 - The Beatles began filming their second, as yet un-named movie. The film would eventually be called "Eight Arms to Hold You" before producers finally settled on the title "Help".

1969 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience plays its last British concert at London's Royal Albert Hall before breaking up.

1976 - The Eagles L.P. "Their Greatest Hits" becomes the first album in history to be certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The new certification represents sales of at least 1 million copies for albums and 2 million copies for singles. The platinum award was originated in the early seventies because "gold" status was achieved by most popular records in a very short period of time.

1981 - Judge Richard Owen of New York State Supreme Court rules that George Harrison 'subconsciously plagiarized' the Chiffons song "He's So Fine" in his hit "My Sweet Lord". Harrison was ordered to pay ABKCO Music $587,000.

1992 - Nirvana's Kurt Cobain marries Courtney Love.

2001 - Johnny Cash is released from a Nashville hospital after recovering from pneumonia, in time to accept his Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance that night.

1962 - Bishop Burke of the Buffalo, New York Catholic Diocese bans the Twist, in any form, from all of his school's functions.

1967 - General Motors begins installing 8 tracks as an option in their Buick line.

1970 - The mini-moog synthesizer is introduced by Dr. Robert Moog. Musicians can now have the sound of strings and horns on stage, without having a full orchestra with them. The American Federation of Musicians considers a ban on the $2,000 keyboard, fearing that its ability to simulate instruments could put musicians out of work.

1977 - Peter Green, who had earlier left Fleetwood Mac, is institutionalized after firing a pistol in the direction of a delivery boy attempting to deliver a $30,000 royalty check. Green had renounced rock and roll in 1970 and apparently didn't want the money. He later worked as a hospital porter and a gravedigger, but returned in 1979 to record "In the Skies."

1983 - Radio station WDHA in New Jersey claims to be the first US station to play music from a compact disc.

1986 - Buddy Holly is posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at it's inaugural ceremony. Other initial inductees are Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Sam Cooke, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Everly Brothers, Little Richard and Fats Domino.

1993 - Warner Brothers Records announces it is releasing rapper Ice-T (real name Tracy Marrow) from his contract due to "creative differences." In summer 1992, the record company found itself in the middle of controversy over Ice-T's song, "Cop Killer". Marrow would go on to co-star in the police drama, Law and Order in 1999.

Townshend warns iPod users

Guitarist Pete Townshend has warned iPod users that they could end up with hearing problems as bad as his own if they don't turn down the volume of the music they are listening to on earphones.
Townshend, 60, guitarist in the The Who, said his hearing was irreversibly damaged by years of using studio headphones and that he now is forced to take 36-hour breaks between recording sessions to allow his ears to recover.
"I have unwittingly helped to invent and refine a type of music that makes its principal components deaf," he said on his Web site. "Hearing loss is a terrible thing because it cannot be repaired. If you use an iPod or anything like it, or your child uses one, you MAY be OK ... But my intuition tells me there is terrible trouble ahead."
Referring to the increasingly popular practice of downloading music from the Internet, Townshend said: "The downside may be that on our computers _ for privacy, for respect to family and co-workers, and for convenience _ we use earphones at almost every stage of interaction with sound."
The Who rock group was famous for its earsplitting live performances, but Townshend said his problem was caused by using earphones in the recording studio.

"Long John" Baldry - British R&B artist died July 21st, 2005, after battling a chest infection for four months. He was 64. Baldry was one of the founding fathers of British rock'n'roll in the '60s. Eric Clapton has stated many times that he was inspired to pick up the guitar after seeing Baldry perform

Renaldo (Obie) Benson - a member of the Four Tops, passed away following a long illness on July 2nd, 2005. He was 69.

Jim Capaldi - drummer for Traffic and a solo artist, died on January 28th, 2005, after a brief battle with stomach cancer. He was 60.

Chris Curtis - drummer and vocalist for the The Searchers, passed away on February 28th at the age of 63. His band placed seven songs in Billboard's Top 40 including "Love Potion Number Nine" and "Needles And Pins".

Tyrone Davis - best known for "Turn Back The Hands of Time" and "Can I Change My Mind", died February 9th, 2005 in from complications following a stroke. He was 66.

Spencer Dryden - drummer for The Jefferson Airplane from 1966 to 1970, passed away on January 10th, 2005, after a brief battle with colon cancer. He was 66.

Michael Gibbins - drummer for Badfinger on their hits "Come And Get It","Day After Day" and "No Matter What", died in his sleep on October 4th, 2005, at the age of 56 .

John Fred Gourrier - who led John Fred and his Playboy Band to Billboard's #1 spot in December 1967 with "Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)" - died April 15th, 2005, after a long bout with kidney disease. He was 63.

Joe Jones - a musician-turned producer who sang the 1961 #3 hit "You Talk Too Much" and went on to become an independent music publisher and advocate for black artists' rights, died on November 27th, 2005. He was 79.

Keith Knudsen - longtime Doobie Brothers drummer who was part of the band during their string of hits in the 1970s, died of pneumonia on February 8th, 2005. He was 56.

Tony Meehan - drummer for The Shadows on their UK number one hit, "Apache", died in hospital on November 28th, 2005, from head injuries sustained in a fall. He was 62. "Apache" spent twenty-one weeks at the top of the British music charts in 1960.

Ray Peterson - who scored a pair of US Top Ten hits with "Tell Laura I Love Her" and "Corinna, Corinna" in 1960, died of cancer on January 25th, 2005, at the age of 69.

Rod Price - a founding member of Foghat died March 22nd, 2005, after falling down a stairway at his home. The 57 year old guitarist was with the band for three platinum and eight gold records including their highest charting US single "Slow Ride" in 1976.

Sammi Smith - best known for the 1971 # 8 hit, "Help Me Make It Through the Night", died February 12th, 2005 at the age of 61. She won a Grammy award for her rendition of the song written by Kris Kristofferson, establishing him as a leading Nashville songwriter.

Jakson Spires - drummer and founding member of Blackfoot, died March 16th, 2005, at the age of 53, after suffering a brain aneurysm. The band reached #26 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August, 1979 with "Highway Song."

Domenic Troiano - guitarist for The Guess Who and The James Gang, died of cancer on May 25th, 2005. He was 59.

Link Wray - the electric guitar innovator who is often credited as the father of the power chord, died at his home in Copenhagen on November 5th, 2005, of natural causes. He was seventy-six. His 1959 instrumental, "Rumble" was banned by many radio stations despite having no lyrics.

1957 - Sammy Davis Jr. hosts a syndicated radio talk show with a round-table discussion of rock & roll. His guests are Columbia Records executive Mitch Miller and MGM Records president Arnold Maxim. When Davis and Miller blast rock & roll as "the comic books of music," Maxim takes an opposing viewpoint and says, "I don't see any end to rock & roll in the near future."

1963 - James Carroll at WWDC in Washington, DC, became the first disc jockey to broadcast a Beatles record on American airwaves. Carroll played "I Want To Hold Your Hand", which he had obtained from his stewardess girlfriend, who brought the single back from Britain. Due to listener demand, it played daily, every hour. Since it hadn't been released yet in the States, Capitol Records initially considered court action, but instead released the single earlier than planned.

1977 - Elvis Costello appears on NBC-TV's Saturday Night Live, where producer Lorne Michaels refuses to allow him to perform "Radio, Radio" (because of the song's criticism of the broadcasting industry). A few measures into "Less than Zero", Costello halts his group and goes into "Radio, Radio". He will never be invited back.

Rock Series At Coconut Club

Over the next several months there is a series of rock shows that are being taped for television broadcast. The series is being produced by Michael Krikorian and is called Today is Tomorrow's Yesterday: The Unknown Heroes Of Rock. This past Wednesday evening late '70's band Starz gave a first rate performance as part of the series. They were both engaging onstage and provided a quality evening of their best material including their chart success "Cherry Baby." In short, these guys ROCKED and I'm glad to have caught their show. This series presents a unique opportunity to see and hear some groundbreaking acts performing in a rare intimate atmosphere. Krikorian should be commended for developing and bringing the series to the Coconut Club. It's a great opportunity for true music fans to experience artists showcasing their material in something other than the environment of a lounge nostalgia show. Next up is the Five Man Electrical Band on Sunday the 8th of January, they are best known for their hit single "Signs." Krikorian told me that four members of the now 7 person band are original members. It is a requirement of the series that the majority of the band's line-ups are original members. It should be another good night of music that Fresno music lovers will be fortunate to experience. Admission is free but reservations are required and can be made by calling 237-8155.

1963 The Beatle's fifth British single, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was released. The record sold one million copies, making it their second million seller. It was released in the US on December 26th and spent seven weeks at #1.

The Elvis movie Fun in Acapulco, co-starring Ursula Andress, was released. Notable for Ursula only.

1964 Three years after he wrote "Crazy" for Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson made his first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, when he opened for Roger Miller.

1969 Simon & Garfunkel's first TV special airs, but their sponsor, AT&T, backs out when they learn that the duo plan to show footage of Bobby Kennedy's funeral march and clips of the Vietnam War

1976 Bob Marley narrowly escaped an assassination attempt when seven gunman sprayed bullets into his Kingston, Jamaica home, where he and the Wailers were rehearsing. He had become unpopular in some circles because of his influence on local politicians. He moved to Miami Florida soon after the incident. The gunmen were never caught.

1979 Anita Pallenburg, common-law wife of Rolling Stone Keith Richards, was cleared of murder charges in the shooting death of her young male companion, whose body had been found in her New York State home.

2001 Beatles' guitarist George Harrison passed away on November 29th at the age of 58, while resting at a friend's home in Los Angeles. The news came as a shock to the world, despite Harrison's much-chronicled cancer treatments. Speaking outside his home in St John's Wood, London, Paul McCartney said: 'I am devastated and very very sad'. Ringo Starr, speaking from Vancouver, Canada said: 'We will miss George for his sense of love, his sense of music and his sense of laughter. We all miss George. In 1955, after telling Ed Sullivan that he would perform a song called "Sixteen Tons", Bo Diddley sings "Bo Diddley", live on CBS-TV's Ed Sullivan Show. He would never be invited back.

In 1958, the Kingston Trio became the very first group to ever have an album reach the top of the US chart. Before them, only solo artists had hit number one. They would go on to record a total of fourteen Top Ten albums and an additional five would enter the top 25.

In 1967, Rolling Stone Magazine quotes San Francisco disco jockey Tom Donahue: "Top Forty radio, as we know it today and have known it for the last ten years, is dead, and its rotting corpse is stinking up the airwaves."

In 1974, the band Spooky Tooth split up after releasing seven albums since 1968. At various times, the group included Gary Wright (who would have solo success with "Dreamweaver" and "Love Is Alive"), Mick Jones (later with Foreigner), Chris Stainton (who went on to work with Joe Cocker), and Henry McCullough. (recruited by Paul McCartney and Wings) The British band never charted in their home country, but gained modest success in the US.

In 1976, the Band's final concert in their original line-up, called The Last Waltz, was given on November 25th. It included appearances by Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Ringo Starr, Emmylou Harris, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Hawkins and Neil Diamond.

In 1998, despite objections from The Recording Industry Association of America, who is worried about the growing problem of internet file swapping, the first portable MP3 player goes on sale in the US.

Good Vibrations

In 1966 the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" made its debut on the US singles chart. It was a song that Brian Wilson and Mike Love wrote and Brian spent six months working on. The tracks were recorded in seventeen different sessions in four Los Angeles studios, at a cost of over sixteen thousand dollars. The recording engineer would later say that the last take sounded exactly like the first, six months earlier. The record would reach number one on December 10th 1966, and be nominated for Grammy "Song Of The Year" but in one of the most tragic Grammy injustices of all time lost out to "Winchester Cathedral" by The New Vaudeville Band.

In 2003 The studio session for Elvis Presley's debut single "That's All Right" was voted the most pivotal moment in rock history by Mojo Magazine readers. Bob Dylan's switch from acoustic to electric guitars in 1965 came second.

In 1996 The film documentary The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus was released. It had been filmed in December 1968, but was held back for nearly 28 years, allegedly because the Stones felt that the Who had upstaged them.

On October 12th, 1978 Nancy Spungen, the girlfriend of Ex-Sex Pistol Sid Vicious, was found dead of abdominal knife wounds in their room at Chelsea Hotel in New York. Vicious, nearly unconscious due to the effects of several different drugs, was charged with her murder, jailed and then released. He would die of a heroin overdose before the case ever came to trial.

In 1970 FCC Commissioner Nicholas Johnson responds to Vice President Spiro Agnew's charge that rock music drives young people to drugs, by playing rock music during a speech, saying that Agnew would do well to listen to song lyrics to understand what was happening around the US.

In 1965 the Who record "My Generation", a song that expresses the anger and frustration of teenagers of the day. The tune will rise to number 2 in the UK, but stalled at number 74 in the US.

On October 3rd, folk legend Woody Guthrie passed away of Huntington’s chorea in a hospital where he had spent the last ten years of his life. Along with writing "This Land is Your Land", Guthrie was a major influence on Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and many others in the folk movement.

Members of The Grateful Dead are busted by California narcotics agents for possession of marijuana at the groups' 710 Ashbury Street House in San Francisco. After six hours, they are all released on bail.

The Beatles reject an offer of $1 million, huge for the time, from promoter Sid Bernstein, to make a second appearance at New York's Shea Stadium . He originally brought the group to Shea in August 1965.

Everything felt so familiar--the songs, the players, the venue and the crowd. But someone was clearly missing from Saturday's (9/24) "Comes a Time - A Celebration of the Music and Spirit of Jerry Garcia show at the U.C. Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA. The missing person wasn't Garcia; the legendary guitarist seemed to be everywhere on this night, and many crowd members remarked that they could feel his presence. If that sounds ludicrous to you, then you don't own a VW Bus with a Steal Your Face decal on it.

Three of the four surviving members of the seminal Grateful Dead lineup--drummers Billy Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart and vocalist-rhythm-guitarist Bob Weir were there. But bassist Phil Lesh was elsewhere, which was a true shame, given the magnitude of this tribute to his former bandmate. In fact, it will be hard to forgive Lesh--a man who owes his spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to Garcia--for missing this show. But, walking up to the picturesque venue, one fan helped put things in proper prospective:
"This isn't about who's not playing," he said, "it's about who is."

Good point. There was certainly much for the capacity crowd to cheer about with a lineup that included Melvin Seals, Merl Saunders, Bruce Hornsby, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, String Cheese Incident and Weir's Ratdog. The biggest name on the bill was Trey Anastasio and fans were champing at the bit to hear the former Phish frontman tear through some Garcia classics.

Unfortunately, the show--a fundraiser for the Rex Foundation, the Dead's charitable arm that provides grants and support to creative endeavors in the arts, sciences and education--didn't quite live up to its promise. The concert was plagued with sound problems and the format—-where musicians rotated through the stage—-made it hard for any ensemble to fully hit a proper jam-band stride.

The six-hour performance got underway with short sets by David Nelson, who was a member of the Garcia side-project New Riders of the Purple Sage, and Colorado's String Cheese Incident, which delivered acoustic versions of the likes of "Casey Jones" and "Friend of the Devil." The remaining members of the Jerry Garcia Band, led by Seals, put on perhaps the best full set of the night by playing such favorites as "Rhapsody in Red" and "Cats Under the Stars."
Weir's Ratdog--which currently also includes drummer Jay Layne, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, guitarist Mark Karan, saxophonist Kenny Brooks and bassist Robin Sylvester—-had a hard time matching the Jerry Garcia Band's energy level. Heck, they had a hard time matching Rip Van Winkle's energy level as they plodded through a set of "Mississippi Half-Step," "Bird Song," "Lazy River Road" and "Big Railroad Blues."

Utilizing portions of Ratdog as the house band, the main set featured an ever-rotating cast of guest musicians performing some of Garcia's best-loved tracks, beginning with the Anastasio-sung "Help on the Way." Anastasio, although he never quite took flight on guitar in a similar fashion to what he routinely did with Phish, definitely sounded great on vocals. Unfortunately, we didn't get to hear his every word, as the sound momentarily cut out midway through "Help on the Way." That was a huge letdown. Thankfully, Anastasio would have better luck later in the show during renditions of such songs as "Eyes of the World." (Side note: Anastasio's version of that Dead classic, while good, still wasn't as great as the one delivered by the Dave Matthews Band at the same venue just two days after Garcia died back in 1995.) Other vocalists didn't do as well with Jerry's material. In particular, Hornsby lost on "Loser" and Haynes wasn't sweet with "Sugaree."

The main set improved greatly in the second half as Kreutzmann and Hart took to the stage to help drum home such great numbers as "Stella Blue," "Scarlet Begonias" and "He's Gone." Lesh's bass work, however, was greatly missed on these songs.

Garcia, indeed, is gone. But these fans will never let him be forgotten.

Jacked Up

Word is that radio frequency 105.9 FM (the original KKDJ-FM) is converting from it's current Spanish language format to a McFormat called "Jack." They even brag about a play list of 1,200 songs. Wow! That's a small ipod's worth. And...if you do the simple math....let's say they play 10 songs an hour because it'll be loaded up with commercial content and promotional material. That means in a 24 hour day they'll play 240 songs and burn through their entire "huge" library in 5 days excluding any new material they beat into the ground of course. How many times can you listen to "Dude Looks Like A Lady?" No offense to Aerosmith. What you'll get is vanilla programming that sounds just like every other "Jack" station in America and they'll refer to it as revolutionary, groundbreaking and cutting edge. RIGHT! The jocks will sound the same as the jocks in L.A. They'll read the same liners. They'll do the same tired promotions with cellular shops and car dealers and call it local content. And who knows...if we're lucky...somebody might do that lame Mayflower Van routine at Thanksgiving. Holy Cow...thanks for the innovative programming and for exposing us to some new music that might be meaningful and artistically important. Sad to say it but this is just the product of lazy baby boomers pretending they're "real" business people while they go about their unconscious ruination of the music industry and the fleecing of unwitting advertisers with deceptive hype.

We all really deserve better but commercial radio has become such a huge wasteland that people just accept what they're spoon fed. Thank your lucky stars that Fresno has an oasis like KFSR-FM 90.7 (or at kfsr.org) where you can get a variety of great new music (and some tasty older music as well) presented with loving care and without hype. It's a community artistic institution that should really be treasured for adding to the quality of life of the place we call home.

On another note, does anybody out there have an idea of how many lame music award shows there are in existence now? The easy answer is too many. How many times can the same vapid people insincerely fawn over each other for the fact that they've received some sort of inconsequential piece of hardware. It just demeans the artistic element of the music business. Not to mention that some of these selfsame individuals are completely inarticulate, boring and so consumed with narcissism that they are incapable of relating to their fellow humans in any meaningful way. Who watches these things and what's more who takes it seriously?

Jimmy Buffett who has eschewed lengthy tours in recent years, preferring to play shows in short stints--plans to perform at an upcoming Hurricane Katrina benefit show in New York, and has also added a Portland, OR, date to his schedule

Buffett claims a spot on the bill of the hurricane "From the Big Apple to the Big Easy," set for Sept. 20 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Dave Matthews, Lenny Kravitz, Simon & Garfunkel and Elton John are also scheduled to perform at the show, which will air as a live pay-per-view telecast. Tickets are on sale now.
Meanwhile, Buffett will sandwich the newly confirmed Portland gig between two previously announced October shows in Las Vegas. Tickets for the Portland show hit the market Saturday (9/17), according to Buffett's www.margaritaville.com.

On Nov. 8, Buffett is set to release a live CD/DVD titled "Live in Fenway Park," which was recorded at the historic Boston ballpark on Sept. 10 and Sept. 12, 2004. The collection includes 2 CDs that contain 32 songs, plus a bonus DVD with performances of 15 songs.

Also in 1963, a two-disc bootleg set of Bob Dylan songs, called "The Great White Wonder" first appears in a Los Angeles record store. It's believed to be the first bootleg album and would continue to be in print in various editions for many years.

In 1967 D.A. Penebaker's Dylan film 'Don't Look Back' premiered in New York. It would become a model for future concert films and it's opening sequence with Dylan flipping the lyric cards to "Subterranean Homesick Blues" would become a rock/film/video cliche.

1975 'Born to Run' by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band is released. The album garners critical raves, and Springsteen appears on the covers of both 'Time' and 'Newsweek' in October.

One of rock 'n' roll's chief architects has been rescued from the rubble of New Orleans.Fats Domino, who had been unaccounted for in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, was plucked from the flooded city by a helicopter late Thursday. He was reported to be in good condition.An APB went out for the musician and his family earlier in the day.The musician's niece, Checquoline Davis, posted a plea on Craigslist.com for information on her missing relatives, writing that Domino and his wife, Rosemary, and their children and grandchildren "didn't get out" of their New Orleans home. Her plea was one of thousands seeking information on missing friends and family on the site.The R&B legend had last been heard from on Sunday night, a day before the storm struck. During a phone call with longtime agent Al Embry, the 77-year-old performer insisted he would ride out the hurricane in his three-story home.It is not immediately known if Domino's family made it to safety.Domino's house was located in the city's 9th Ward, an area that is heavily flooded and littered with dead bodies.The singer and boogie-woogie pianist, born Antoine Domino, has sold over 110 million records in his nearly five-decade career highlighted by the jukebox staples "Blueberry Hill" and "Ain't That a Shame." The New Orleans music fixture's 1949 recording of "The Fat Man" is considered by some to be the first rock 'n' roll record, and Domino was among the inaugural group of inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

Another Hall of Famer, singer-songwriterAllen Toussaint, was listed among the missing, although Fox News reported that Toussaint may be among the 20,000-plus refugees seeking shelter in the Super Dome.With New Orleans a hub of jazz, blues and even rap, several musicians were impacted by the storm. Rapper Juvenile's home was destroyed and he says he has lost several friends. Soul Asylum frontman Dave Pirner, who was waiting out the storm in his native Minneapolis, told the Associated Press he still hadn't heard anything about the condition of his home and recording studio in the Crescent City. Pirner moved there seven years ago.Meanwhile, several high-powered denizens are rallying support. In 1977, Three people are arrested in Memphis after trying to steal Elvis' body. As a result, his body is moved to Graceland.

In 2002, the longstanding battle between the sixties girl group The Ronettes and rock'n'roll impresario Phil Spector was on the docket this week of New York State Court of Appeals in Albany. The Ronettes, led by Phil Spector's then-wife Ronnie Spector, recorded 28 songs for Spector from 1963 to 1967. Under a 1963 contract, they received a one-time payment of $14,482. Group members contend that the contract didn't cover the royalties for Ronettes songs used in movies, TV shows, and advertising. The Ronettes' big hit, "Be My Baby" was featured in the movie "Dirty Dancing". In November 2001, a lower state court said the Ronettes were entitled to nearly $3 million. Spector's lawyers counter that the 1963 contract gives him ownership of all the group's recordings. The court battle between Spector and the Ronettes started in 1988.

Three that continue to please

Some albums are enjoyable right out of the box and then fade away. Some never quite measure up and then there are some that are disappointing but become more enjoyable with repeated listening. Then there are those that hit the bullseye immediately and continue to please. The three albums mentioned here are of the latter variety and should provide repeated listening pleasure.

Of the three Madeleine Peyroux's debut "Careless Love" is the oldest. Peyroux has a smoky jazz style delivery that just rolls out very easily. It is reminiscent of the past but there's also a taste of the contemporary (tracks by Dylan and Leonard Cohen). The subtle organ that weaves in and out of the background of these tracks is the perfect compliment to her singing. She's subtle yet evocative and will provide plent of auditory satisfaction.

Shelby Lynne's latest, "Suit Yourself" is intelligent, straightforward and continues her growth as an artist since 2000's "I Am Shelby Lynne" established her identity outside of the relentless Nashville machine. She spans genres here and the fact that this was recorded in her home under her direction allows, for maybe the first time, a glimpse into what her vision is...personal and soulful. Check out her reverent reading of Tony Joe White's "Rainy Night In Georgia" the only cover on an immensley enjoyable work.

Jim White's "Drill A Hole In The Substrate And Tell Me What You See" is an eerie, haunting journey with White almost whispering his stories from life's other side. It's like finding a static-filled spooky, esoteric radio station at the edge of the dial, late at night, that you just can't tune out. It's voice's from deep inside our subconscious oozing out of their usual confinement and mesmerizing us with their tales. It'll keep you going back through that hole in the substrate.

Bring Me the head Of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Thieves snatched the head of a life-size Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wax figure from a Salzburg museum, police said Saturday. The figure of the composer was on display at "Next to Mozart," a multimedia museum that opened last year. The wax head has an estimated value of $18,427, but museum employees told Austria Press Agency the work was truly unique — and appealed for its return.

"It must have happened between 8 p.m. Friday, when we closed, and today before 9 a.m.," museum employee Elisabeth Stoeckl told APA. "When we opened up again, Mozart's head was gone." The Mozart figure was on the museum's fourth floor. "It stands just next to the wax figure of Herbert von Karajan," Stoeckl said, referring to one of the great conductors of the 20th century.

Turkmenistan President Saparmurat Niyazov has deemed recorded music a negative influence on society and banned it from public events, TV and weddings. Niyazov has already banned opera and ballet from the former Soviet state, saying they were unnecessary, the BBC reported. "Unfortunately, one can see on television old voiceless singers lip-synching their old songs, Niyazov told his cabinet regarding music on TV. "Don't kill talents by using lip-synching ... create our new culture." In 2001, Niyazov, the country's president for life, banned gold tooth caps, long hair and beards on young men. He has also banned car radios, closed all hospitals except those in the capital and renamed calendar months after his relatives, the BBC said.

Let's set the way back machine for 1962 where the No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit was ``The Loco-Motion,'' by Little Eva. In those much more simpler times Little Eva Narcissus Boyd was a baby-sitter for songwriters Gerry Goffin and Carole King who were inspired to write a song about a dance she would do around the house. Little Eva's follow-up, "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby" was a staple of early Beatles' live shows. Little Eva passed away in 2003.

John Lee Hooker

Monday and a new week with school back in session and all that goes with that. John Lee Hooker was born on this date in 1917. The blues legend had a profound impact on Many 60's and 70's blues oriented rock groups, most notably The Stones, Yardbirds and Canned Heat. John Lee passed away in 2001 leaving a rich legacy in the blues and rock. He was probably best known for "Boom, Boom." The Shangri-la's recording of "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" debuted on the charts on this day in 1964. It's one of those haunting songs of summer that has withstood the test of time. It still sounds great today and of course also was honored with a cover version by Aerosmith. Finally, it was on this day in 1968 that Cynthia Lennon filed for divorce from John. The reason was his relationship with Yoko (the third leg of that infamous triangle). More later.

As anyone can see the "Through The Listening Glass" Blog has been down for a while. A combination of lethargy, family tragedies and probably profound ennui. The show continues however on KFSR-FM 90.7 in Fresno every Wednesday night from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. (PDT). It's available on the net by going to kfsr.org and clicking on one of the streaming options. There's plenty of great programming at KFSR not just Listening Glass. Please check it out frequently. Sorry for the recent lack of activity here at the 'ol Blog but a family emergency caused me to travel back to the old hometown of Buffalo, New York to attend to a health related situation.
